100% Renewable Electricity for Your SF Home, School, or Business in a Few Quick and Easy Steps

Updated: May 25, 2020

Switch your electric plan from regular to SuperGreen with CleanPowerSF to get 100% renewably sourced electricity for a minimal cost increase!

If you live in San Francisco and are looking for an easy, hands-off way to switch to renewable electricity and reduce your carbon footprint, I have the perfect solution for you! CleanPowerSF is a program of the San Francisco Public Utilities Commission that works to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by purchasing renewable electricity from sources such as wind and solar and delivering it to you via PG&E electric lines. CleanPowerSF customers are automatically put on the Green Plan with 50% renewable electricity, but for a small additional price increase can upgrade to the 100% renewable SuperGreen Plan with electricity generated by the nearby Shiloh Wind Farms in Solano County, California.

“Are you living in San Francisco and looking for an easy way to switch your home, school, or business to renewable electricity? If so, I have a solution for you!”

Upgrading to the SuperGreen Plan is super easy. All you have to do is go to cleanpowersf.org , scroll down to the bottom of their home page, click "Upgrade now," enter your PG&E account number, your last name or business name, and your zip code, and voilà, you are upgraded!

The biggest upside to switching to the SuperGreen Plan is that you will be helping the environment by supplying your home, business, or school with 100% renewable electricity rather than electricity generated by burning fossil fuels such as coal, oil, and gas, thus drastically reducing your carbon footprint. Additionally, switching to this plan is very easy. With a few clicks of your keyboard, you can start receiving 100% renewable electricity for your home, school, or business, no long and expensive solar installations required.

The only downside to switching to the SuperGreen Plan is that it is slightly more expensive. For the average home, this price difference is fairly insignificant, about $1 more per month than the 38% renewable PG&E default plan and $3 more per month than the 50% renewable Green CleanPowerSF plan. For businesses and schools that use a lot more energy than a home would, the price increase can be quite a bit bigger. However, just decreasing your monthly electric usage by a couple percent can make up for the cost increase of this switch. (See posts under Energy Efficiency for tips on how to reduce your electric usage!) To see the different residential and commercial Green and SuperGreen rates and find out what rates would apply to your home, school, or business, go to cleanpowersf.org.

Now go switch to SuperGreen and make me SuperHappy! :)
